Arline Rose Mandas
Arline Rose Mandas, 92, of Slippery Rock, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, died Aug. 25 while living with her daughter, Marilynn Martin-Blinn. Arline had been under hospice care for several months and passed quietly.
Arline was born in St. Louis, Mo., on Feb. 5, 1921, to Richard and Elizabeth (Delbregge) Krueger, second generation German immigrants.
After high school, Arline graduated from the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing, then joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, serving during World War II at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs, Colo. While there, Lt. Krueger met and married Pfc. John Nicholas Mandas of Davenport, Iowa.
In 1957, they moved to Oakwood, Ohio, where Nick worked as a research chemist at NCR until his death in 1966. Arline worked at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, the Community Blood Center and the Brown Hospital, at the Dayton VA Center, where she designed the first Nurse Administered Ward to transition patients from doctor care to self-care before being discharged.
Arline retired from the VA in 1986, and then she was able to pursue her interests in holistic and alternative medicine. She had a massage therapy practice and Shaklee business for over 20 years.
Arline loved to travel. In the 1970s and 1980s as a member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, she attended conferences all over the world. She walked the Great Wall and visited hospitals in China. In Egypt, she rode camels and slept in the king's chamber of The Great Pyramid. She traveled by canoe up the Amazon River on her way to Machu Picchu.
Arline is survived by her four children, Richard, Steven, Marilynn and Gregory; her five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
