A week of snow: Residents embrace winter blanket after near-record one-day snowfall

Although temperatures will finally break out of the single-digits and teens next week, a meteorologist said Thursday, Jan. 29, that the snow will probably stick around a good while longer.

Chris Leonardi, a meteorologist with National Weather Service Pittsburgh, said the record-breaking lows predicted over the weekend nights won’t continue, but temperatures will still remain in the ballpark of record lows. The predicted low of -7 degrees Friday night, Jan. 30, would beat the previous record for the day, which was -5 in 2019, and the predicted low of -10 Saturday, Jan. 31, would be well below the record for the date of -5, which was also set in 2019.

“It’s still going to be below normal, but we’re going to see similar temps today right on through Sunday,” Leonardi said. “Once Monday gets here we’ll get to the 20s, and nighttime lows will be in the teens.”

Aside from the low temperatures, the sheer volume of snow that blanketed Western Pennsylvania was some of the most the area has seen since 2000. Leonardi said Pittsburgh recorded 11.2 inches of snow accumulation on Jan. 25, which was the second most snowfall the region has gotten in a single day. The record was set on Feb. 5, 2010, when Pittsburgh recorded 11.4 inches of snow accumulation.

“There won’t be snow that’s going to add any significant accumulation,” Leonardi said of the coming week.
