Make good choices when the weather is bad
Many organizations, schools, businesses and even municipal government offices closed this weekend and Monday following the snow that blanketed Butler County on Sunday, Jan. 25.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh reported that some areas of Butler County received 18 or more inches of snow Sunday into Monday.
Snow-covered roads generally inconvenience everyone and the level of snow accumulation we received no doubt has people concerned. Do they have enough food to last them until it clears? Will they lose power because of the cold? What if they have to go somewhere while the roads aren’t safe?
These are all valid concerns, and if the cold weather lasts long enough, the likelihood of needing to go somewhere increases.
Winter storms also present challenges to businesses, which may miss out on revenue because of a weather-related closure.
While the weather and amount of snow we receive is out of our control, we can respond by making good choices during periods that travel is unsafe. It seems many people already loaded up on groceries and other supplies for the week, which was an understandable precaution to take. Many car owners lifted their windshield wipers off the windshields to prevent them from freezing in place.
It’s likely that people are also sealing the spaces in doors and windows and keeping their faucets dripping to prevent pipes from freezing. These are all good practices for when cold weather takes an area by storm.
So as the county thaws from this snowstorm, just be patient as some businesses and organizations take a little longer to get back to normal. Some may remain closed well into the week for myriad reasons, but it’s all so they can come out on the other side with no frostbite — or worse — to show for it.
