Extreme temperatures with little snow accumulation will follow Sunday’s foot or more of snow around Butler County, the U.S. National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said Monday morning, Jan. 26.

A weather service spokesperson said northern parts of the county received 14 to 18 inches of snow while the southern portion received 11 to 12 inches. He said a snow band that was positioned across the north led to the increased snowfall.

With all the snow, Monday morning’s commute included driving along snow-covered roads. In some municipalities, there were side roads yet untouched by a plow.

“It’s hard to keep up with 1-to-2-inch-per-hour rates (of snowfall),” the weather service spokesperson said.

Residents around Butler County reported snow to be between 14 and 19.5 inches, according to the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, a volunteer-based network accredited by the U.S. National Weather Service that measures precipitation.

The spokesperson said light snow may continue to fall on and off throughout Monday through Wednesday morning, but less than an inch of accumulation is expected.

But as of 9 a.m., it was still snowing in the northern part of the county.

Temperatures during the day are expected to reach 18 degrees Fahrenheit, but tonight, temperatures will drop between 0 and -5 degrees.

Wind chills are expected and will make temperatures feel like near -20 degrees Fahrenheit, the spokesperson said.

The weather service has also begun to see ice accumulation on the Allegheny County rivers and will have an in-depth ice report Tuesday, the spokesperson said.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike lifted all weather-related vehicle restrictions at 4:30 a.m. Monday, according to its Facebook page. PennDOT has also lifted vehicle restrictions.

Previous snowfall

The last time Butler County saw this much snowfall over a wide area was Feb. 15, 2010, when it snowed 10 to 12 inches in one day, the weather service said.

The next closest it got to the weekend’s snowfall was in March 2018 when it snowed around 8.5 inches.
