PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh school board has voted to furlough 280 school employees, including 190 teachers.

The board's vote Wednesday night will reduce the payroll by 176 kindergarten-12th grade teachers, 14 pre-kindergarten teachers, 59 paraprofessionals, 12 adjuncts, 10 other pre-kindergarten professionals and nine technical-clerical workers.

Reports say the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers employees were among the district's 3,477 school-based employees this year.

Along with 17 secretarial-clerical workers and four central office workers who previously received notices, the district is laying off 301 employees. Also, four teachers who were full time will become part time.

The workforce reductions, along with school closings and other changes, will save an estimated $42.2 million.

School board member Theresa Colaizzi says she is “sad to do this” but “we don't have a choice.”

PITTSBURGH — A fellow state Supreme Court judge won't have to testify at the upcoming preliminary hearing for a fellow justice charged in a campaign corruption case.An Allegheny County judge on Wednesday said Justice Max Baer doesn't have to appear at Justice Joan Orie Melvin's next court appearance, scheduled for Monday.Melvin is charged with illegally using her taxpayer-funded staff to campaign for a seat on the high court bench while she was a Superior Court judge. Her attorneys subpoenaed Baer, whose law clerk formerly worked for Melvin and is expected to be a key witness.Judge Jeffrey Manning called the subpoenas a “fishing expedition.”Melvin's sister, former state Sen. Jane Orie, is in jail after being convicted on similar charges related to her and Melvin's campaigns.
