Additional charges filed against Butler man in alleged burglaries
A Butler man accused of stealing from the Fairground Market and Salvation Army had additional charges filed Wednesday, Jan. 14, related to one of the burglaries.
Erik Stephen Cupps, 37, was charged Jan. 14 by state police with one felony count each of burglary and criminal trespass, and one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property following a May 13 incident at Fairground Market in Prospect.
Cupps was previous charged Jan. 9 with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft following a Jan. 1 incident at the Salvation Army in Butler. Police allege Cupps admitted to the two burglaries he’s charged with and an additional burglary after a search warrant was executed Jan. 9.
In the May 13 incident, police responded to Fairground Market for reports of a burglary. They saw on surveillance cameras an man, later identified as Cupps, stole two cash registers containing around $1,000 from the market’s office.
In the Jan. 1 incident, police responded to the same location for a burglary and found about 20 lottery tickets had been stolen from the lottery section. Police tracked the stolen tickets and found that they were attempted to be cashed later that day at 3B’s Tobacco in Butler Township.
Police spoke with a Fairground Market owner the following day and found Cupps was previously employed there and had been fired for stealing, police said.
Police executed a search warrant Jan. 9 on a Butler residence and found the clothes Cupps was reportedly wearing in at least one of the burglaries.
Police also allege Cupps was involved in a Dec. 14 burglary at the Salvation Army, but charges related to the incident have not yet been filed. Police said they responded and found a safe broken open using a grinder or similar tool, and around $1,150 and two sets of keys were stolen.
His preliminary hearing regarding the Jan. 1 charges is scheduled for 3 p.m. Jan. 21 before District Judge Joseph Nash.
His preliminary hearing for the May 13 charges has not yet been scheduled.
