Dorothy Louise Haas “Dotty” Berry, 83, of Chicora passed away Friday at Butler Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born April 21, 1929, in Emlenton and was the daughter of William Melvin and Pearl Viola (Shawkey) Haas.

Dotty spent her youth in the Emlenton area, and after graduating from high school, attended the Ohio Institute for Medical Assistants in Cleveland. She earned her certifications to become an X-ray technician and worked at Kane Hospital in Kane, Pa., for three years after graduation. She then worked for Butler Memorial Hospital.

Dotty married Pryor O. Berry Jr. on June 26, 1954, and they moved to the Chicora area, calling it home ever since. She continued to work just a few years after their marriage, turning her focus to her new family.

Dottie was very involved in the Chicora community and held memberships with the Handy Anne Hobby Club of Chicora, the Chicora chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for a number of years. Dotty had many hobbies, including stamp collecting, feeding and caring for wild songbirds, spending time with her pet cats, planting flowers in her gardens and playing solitaire. She also had a crafty side, making many beautiful quilts, needlework projects and crocheted gifts throughout her life. Dotty used her talent to show her family how much she loved them by making each new member of a family a special baby blanket.

Dotty's love for her family and others will truly be her legacy. She accepted everyone who came into her life and looked out for them all. Her generosity and kind, loving heart will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Pryor O. Berry Jr.; sons, Roger Berry and his wife, Helen, of Chicora, Douglas Berry and his wife, Lesli, of Akron, Ohio, and Gregg Berry and his wife, Diana, of Chicora; daughters, Susan Burket and her husband, Alva, of Chicora and Dr. Kimberly Berry of Chicora; daughter-in-law, Heather Berry of Whitingham, Vt.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dotty was preceded in death by her parents; son, David Berry; one grandchild; and sister, Mary Margaret Weller.

BERRY — Friends of Dorothy Louise Haas “Dotty” Berry, who passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, will be received from 10:30 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2217 Chicora Road, Chicora, with the Rev.
