PITTSBURGH — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who jumped into the Allegheny River.

Police say the man might have drowned in an effort to swim to the riverbank on the North Shore from the Fort Duquesne Bridge Riverwalk.

Witnesses told Pittsburgh police the man, whose name was not released, had been reading a book near the walkway when he kicked off his boots and jumped into the water at about 3 p.m. Saturday.

Police said the man began to struggle in the water and went under. He was pulled from the river shortly after 4 p.m. and taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

PITTSBURGH — Police said a man stole a woman's purse then hit her with his car while making his getaway.Investigators said the woman told officers she was sitting on a sidewalk painting her nails Sunday afternoon when a man swiped her purse and jumped into a sport utility vehicle.Police say the woman tried to stop the vehicle by stepping in front of it when she was struck. The unidentified woman suffered some scrapes to her knees and shoulder.Authorities say the investigation is continuing.

PITTSBURGH — A woman is facing charges after she allegedly left her 6-year-old son with a stranger on board a bus while she was being arrested on a shoplifting charge.Police said Portia Scoggins had two children with her Friday when she boarded a bus after taking items from a pharmacy, but just one when they pulled it over and arrested her.Officers said Scoggins left the older child on board, giving a stranger the address for one of the boy's friends and instructions to drop him off there.Police later learned the boy had been on the bus and found him at the address Scoggins supplied.
