Smith, Hill lead Seneca Valley wrestling to 3rd at Bo Wood; Mars’ Serrao wins at MAC Tournament: Roundup
Riley Smith and Zach Hill claimed individual titles at 107 and 145 pounds, respectively, to lead Seneca Valley boys wrestling to a third-place finish Saturday at the Bo Wood Tournament.
Hill beat Knoch’s Owen Layhew 8-3 in the final, and Smith won his gold 11-8 over Franklin’s Seth Hollerman.
The Raiders earned 134 points, and the Knights finished 13th with 37. Layhew was the lone Knight to make the medal rounds and won his first two bouts via pin.
SV’s Branson May lost his 114-pound final by first-period pin to Highland’s Javeon Chambers.
Smith went 3-0 with a pin and technical fall, and Hill went 3-0 with a tech fall victory.
Mars 4th at Ed Driscoll MAC Tournament — Freshman Olympic Serrao continued his impressive start with a 15-0 technical fall win over West Allegheny’s Thomas Bencho in the 139-pound championship bout.
The title led the Planets to a fourth-place finish with 140.5 points at Laurel High School. Benjamin Goering (127) pinned Moon’s Landon Lower in the third period to win third, and Parker Joseph (133) and Samuel Passarelli (145) lost their third-place bouts by major decision.
Serrao went 4-0 at the MAC Tournament with two pins and two tech falls.
Naomi Venesky scored 14 points, but Karns City fell 45-34 to West Shamokin.
The Gremlins trailed by just two heading into the fourth quarter, but Aubrey Reefer scored eight of her 14 points in the final eight minutes to help the Wolves pull away.
Hannah Summerville had seven points for KC.
Owen Congdon scored a team-high 24 points to lead Seneca Valley to a 71-62 win Saturday over Canon-McMillan.
Congdon was a frequent visitor to the free-throw line, going 16 of 20 from the stripe. Ryan Preister (16 points), Andrew Omasits (15) and Jaxon Householder (11) rounded out the Raiders’ double-digit scorers.
Roman Koenemund scored a game-high 26 for the Big Macs.
Northgate swept Mars in the Planets’ Sunday home meet on senior night 62-32 (girls) and 56-38 (boys).
Aiden Lin led two boys wins, claiming the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.09 and assisting the 200 free relay’s win in 1:37.16 with Conner Liu, Gavin Best and Preston Heynes. Isabella Mascari won the girls 100 fly in 1:04.92.
