Strong gusts of wind knocked down power lines around Butler County Monday morning, Dec. 29, leaving more than 1,500 residents without power.

The majority of reports came from Center Township after power lines fell around 6:15 a.m. along North Benbrook Road, according to Butler County Emergency Services dispatch. FirstEnergy Corporation reported 1,471 residents without power at about 8 a.m.

FirstEnergy said a crew had arrived at the scene.

The county is under a wind advisory until 1 a.m. Tuesday with snow squalls possible throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.

The weather service expects winds blowing west at 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wind chills are expected to remain around 12 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to drop in the afternoon to the upper 20s and will continue to drop in the evening, increasing the potential for snow. About an inch of snow is likely to begin falling around 3 p.m., lasting until 2 a.m. Tuesday.

An additional 432 residents were without power in Connoquenessing Township surrounding the areas of Whitestown, Prospect and Eagle Mill roads, according to First Energy. An outage in the area was caused by tree damage. Other nearby outages are still being investigated.

Emergency services confirmed a report of wires down came in at 7:44 a.m. in the area of Whitestown Road and Eagle Mill Road.

Around 180 outages were also reported in the area of Route 68 and Seven Hills Road in Donegal Township. A crew has arrived and is investigating the outage, according to First Energy.

Areas of Butler, Muddy Creek and Summit townships also reported fewer than 20 outages.
