IOWA CITY, Iowa — Troy Smith threw for 186 yards and four touchdowns and No. 1 Ohio State picked up its second road win over a ranked opponent by manhandling No. 13 Iowa 38-17 Saturday night.

The Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) faced three ranked teams in September — Texas, Penn State and the Hawkeyes — and beat them all by at least 17 points. Ohio State, which extended the nation's longest current winning streak to 12 games, won't face another team now ranked until their season finale against Michigan on Nov. 18.

Iowa (4-1, 1-1) fell to 0-10-1 against No. 1 teams.

Ohio State broke open a 21-10 game with long scoring drives on its first two possessions of the second half. Anthony Gonzalez, who caught two touchdown passes, took the air out of Kinnick Stadium with a spectacular 30-yard TD catch that put the Buckeyes ahead 28-10 early in the second half.

No. 3 USC 28, Washington State 22

Steve Smith responded to the loss of All-American Dwayne Jarrett with a career-high 11 catches for 186 yards and two second-half touchdowns and the Trojans survived a scare.

Smith had just 12 catches through three games. But that was before Jarrett stayed home with a strained shoulder he injured in last week's win at Arizona.

No. 5 Florida 28, Alabama 13

Florida coach Urban Meyer learned a lot last year at Alabama, most noticeably that defense can win games in the Southeastern Conference.

Ryan Smith had two interceptions, Reggie Nelson returned another pick for a touchdown and the Gators avenged last season's embarrassing loss.

The Gators pressured John Parker Wilson into three turnovers, converted two of them into fourth-quarter touchdowns and turned a one-point game into a comfortable win.

No. 6 Michigan 28, Minnesota 14

The Little Brown Jug is headed back to Ann Arbor.

Chad Henne got the Wolverines off to a fast start with three touchdown passes in the first half and Michigan hung on for the victory.

Henne was 17-for-24 for 284 yards and Mike Hart rushed for 195 yards — 54 on his final carry of the game — for the Wolverines (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten), who looked like they would blow the game open early but let the Gophers (2-3, 0-2) hang around with a sluggish performance in the second half.

No. 7 Texas 56, Sam Houston State 3

Henry Melton ran for two touchdowns, Colt McCoy passed for two more and Texas emptied its bench and still piled up the points on Division I-AA Sam Houston State.

Melton, a 270-pound tailback normally used in short-yardage and mop-up situations, got the start and ran for 63 yards as the Longhorns (4-1) sat Jamaal Charles and Selvin Young against the overmatched Bearkats (2-2).

No. 9 LSU 48, Mississippi St. 17

JaMarcus Russell threw for 330 yards and three TDs and matched a school record with 14 consecutive completions for LSU in a game delayed nearly an hour by a thunderstorm.

Russell threw three touchdown passes and completed 18 of 20 passes without an interception.

No. 10 Georgia 14, Mississippi 9

Kregg Lumpkin ran for 101 yards and Matthew Stafford directed two second-half touchdown drives for Georgia.

Neither Stafford nor starter Joe Cox, both freshmen, had much of an impact on the Rebels. But good field position and a strong second-half performance by Lumpkin helped the Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) come from behind to win for the second straight week.

No. 24 Georgia Tech 38, No. 11 Virginia Tech 27

Reggie Ball and his teammates made their second consecutive visit to Virginia Tech a success, jumping out to a big lead and avenging last year's blowout loss.

With Ball finding receivers Calvin Johnson and James Johnson with ease, and mixing in enough of his own running to keep the No. 11 Hokies guessing, the Yellow Jackets (4-1, 2-0 ACC) led 21-0 after just 10:48.

No. 12 Notre Dame 35, Purdue 21

Brady Quinn threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns and Darius Walker ran for 146 yards as the Irish played their best offensive game of the season.

Notre Dame withstood a big day by Curtis Painter and the Boilermakers' offense. Painter was 23-for-46 for 398 yards and Selwyn Lymon had eight catches for 238 yards — the second most by a Purdue receiver and the most ever by an Irish opponent.

No. 14 Oregon 48, Arizona St 13

The Ducks came to the desert aiming to prove their controversial victory over Oklahoma two weeks ago was no fluke. Mission accomplished.

Oregon (4-0, 2-0 Pac-10) used a balanced attack and a relentless defense to crush Arizona State (3-2, 0-2). Dennis Dixon threw for 215 yards and three TDs, Jonathan Stewart ran for 142 yards and Jaison Williams caught 10 passes for 137 yards and two TDs. The Ducks registered six sacks and limited Arizona State to 175 yards.

No. 15 Tennessee 41, Memphis 7

Erik Ainge threw four touchdown passes and the Vols (4-1) had an easy time beating their cross-state rival.

Ainge, pulled early in the fourth quarter, completed 23 of 27 passes for 324 yards, including two TD tosses to Jayson Swain and an 84-yarder to Robert Meachem. His other scoring pass was a 7-yarder to Bret Smith.

No. 18 Clemson 51, Louisiana Tech 0

James Davis ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns to lead three Clemson rushers with over 100 yards as the Tigers beat Louisiana Tech.

No. 20 California 41, Oregon St. 13

Nate Longshore threw for 341 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Marshawn Lynch, and California coasted.

No. 21 Nebraska 39, Kansas 32

Cody Glenn scored from a yard out in the first overtime for Nebraska, which blew a 17-point lead.

No. 22 Boise St. 36, Utah 3

Jared Zabransky passed for 210 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score in what turned into an easy win for Boise State.

No. 25 Missouri 28, Colorado 13

Chase Daniel threw four touchdown passes to lead the Tigers, 5-0 for the first time since 1981.
