Fleeing suspect turns himself to police in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — The man accused of shooting his girlfriend in Pittsburgh and later evading troopers in a getaway chase in Butler County this past weekend turned himself in at 11:50 a.m. today at the Municipal Court Building, Pittsburgh police said.

Robert Amend, 49, of Pittsburgh had been on the run for nearly a week, facing charges of attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

Amend allegedly forced his way into his estranged girlfriend's apartment this past Saturday and shot her in the side and leg.

He tried to shoot her in the head, according to court documents, but missed.

Following the shooting, Amend fled in his Hyundai Sonata. Police said he drove north to Armstrong County before traveling into Butler County. Trooper Ryan Hand was on patrol on Route 68 in Chicora when he spotted Amend's car traveling west. Hand made a U-turn, activated his emergency lights and siren and gave chase.

While speeding away, according to charging documents, the suspect passed two vehicles on the right berm in front of Snow's Polaris dealership.

Troopers in two other cruisers soon joined the pursuit “at speeds in excess of 100 mph,” the criminal complaint said.

During the chase, Amend allegedly was weaving in and out of traffic in both directions.

Police radioed ahead to another trooper at the Oakland Township Elementary School, where a spike strip was deployed in the westbound lane. His right rear tire struck the strip.

Moments later Amend turned into a driveway and went into the middle of the Woodbine Oaks mobile home park in Oakland Township, police said. He fled into woods.

An intensive nine-hour manhunt followed.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton of Chicora on Thursday signed the latest warrant for Amend.

He is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, a felony, and reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor.

Amend has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 27 in Pittsburgh Municipal Court before Judge Jeffrey A. Manning.
