Occupy Pittsburgh packs up to leave

PITTSBURGH — Protesters with Occupy Pittsburgh were packing up their tents Sunday, a day before the deadline for their eviction from a downtown park where they have been since October protesting what they describe as economic inequality and corporate greed.

Last week, a judge ruled that protesters have damaged the property and that the ongoing trespass at Mellon Green park meets the legal standard of “irreparable harm” to Bank of New York Mellon, which owns the space.

Occupy Pittsburgh member Jeff Cech said the group has been told it must be out by noon today. On Sunday, he said members had taken down about half of the estimated 50 tents and that he doesn’t anticipate confrontations over leaving the space.

“I think that everyone here realizes that after (today) the encampment will not be here,” said Cech, adding that the group has been averaging about 10 to 15 campers a night lately. As many as 100 protesters have camped at the park since Oct. 15, but that number dropped to only a handful with the onset of winter. The bank sued in late December.

The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department has said the situation would be handled like any other eviction.
