Slippery Rock men’s, women’s basketball lose for first time in PSAC play this season: Roundup

Slippery Rock’s undefeated starts to the basketball season came to an end Sunday.

The men’s team lost in an upset in overtime against Lock Haven 68-59, dropping The Rock to 10-2, 3-1. The Bald Eagles won their first conference game of the season.

Freshman guard Dame Givner scored 39 points and had five steals, three assists and three rebounds. His 39 points are the most in the PSAC this season. Kerwin Prince added 17 points and eight rebounds, and Brady Mayo had 14.

The surprising loss came a day after The Rock held off Shippensburg 76-70, keeping the Raiders scoreless over the final 2:02 of the game.

Ike Herster had 14 points for SRU in that one, followed by Brady Mayo’s 13.

SRU had won seven straight before Sunday.

The women, meanwhile, also lost to a team Sunday that entered the game under .500 in conference play, knocked out 68-59 by Lock Haven.

SRU is now 5-5, 3-1 after splitting its weekend slate of games. Iyanna Wade, another freshman, led Slippery Rock with a career-high 20 points and dished out six assists. Karianna Woods had 12 points and Sophia Hook had 11 points.

The Rock women had trouble, though, Saturday against one-win Shippensburg, needing double overtime to win 69-64 after trailing by six entering the fourth quarter. Hook scored a career-high 27 points in SRU’s first 2OT win since 2022.
