Congressman Mike Kelly, R-3rd, said Monday that he’s supporting President Donald Trump’s travel ban, and believes it will help federal officials “strengthen our national security and uphold our values.”

Trump signed the executive order, officially known as “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” on Friday night. The order suspends the Refugee Admissions Program for 120 days and imposes a 90-day ban on travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations — Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. Trump administration officials have pointed out that the countries on the list were identified under a program instituted by former President Barack Obama.

Kelly, on Monday, said he stood by Trump’s executive order, and disagreed strongly with critics who have labeled it discriminatory and targeted toward Muslims. He said the order would strengthen the country’s policy on refugees, and work to frustrate terrorist groups such as the Islamic State.

“For a long time, we have needed a stronger, stricter verification system for refugees entering our country to fully protect Americans from the enemy’s evolving techniques,” said Kelly in a statement.

He said it was important that the country continue to accept innocent people fleeing from oppression, while also working to keep Americans safe.

“My primary focus is making sure the order improves our refugee program in a way that both strengthens our national security and upholds our values,” according to Kelly’s statement.
