Margaret Ida Shields
Margaret Ida Shields, 96, of Orchard Manor in Grove City, formerly of Slippery Rock Township, Butler County, passed away at 10:51 p.m. Thursday at Orchard Manor.
She was born on Dec. 7, 1918, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, to the late John Henry Brown and Catherine McMonagle Brown.
She married James Russell Shields on April 14, 1940, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1991.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Zion Baptist Church in Worth Township, where she was the oldest living member of the church.
Margaret was a member of the Keenagers of Portersville. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and making crafts.
Survivors include her two daughters, Margaret “Peggy” A. and her husband, Gary Sutherland, and Catherine “Cathy” L. and her husband, John Hemmerlin, all of Slippery Rock; her three sons, Henry A. Shields of Key West, Fla., Ronald D. Shields of Slippery Rock and Brian K. Shields of Greencastle, Ind.; her sister, Marie Brown of Grove City; her eight grandchildren, and her 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Donald R., and her brother, John Brown.
Shields — The family of Margaret Ida Shields, who passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at theSmith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. Thomas Meling, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church, presiding. Interment will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mt. Chestnut.Memorial contributions may be given to Orchard Manor.
