It’s Week 1.

No, really. This is the real Week 1, even though four Butler County area teams played last Friday in “Week Zero” action.

Week Zero was all the great taste of a regular football week without the calories.

For the eight other teams that didn’t put on the pads and helmet for a real, honest-to-goodness, the-stats-and-outcome-counts game, this is their chance to open the season.

On to the picks:

Penn Hills 27, Butler 13 — The Golden Tornado jump out of the gate against a new member of their section, Penn Hills.

Butler will keep this one close, but Penn Hills will introduce itself to the conference with a W.

Seneca Valley 25, Peters Township 12 — The Raiders hope to answer their biggest question in this opener: Who will be a reliable target for do-it-all QB Jack Cook?

Seneca Valley may not get all the answers in the first four quarters of the season, but it’ll find enough to win.

Knoch 13, Blackhawk 6 — This will be an old-fashion, bare-knuckle brawl — and on a grass surface, no less.

The Knights will land one more haymaker.

Mars 24, South Fayette 23 — The Planets’ defense put up a zero in Week Zero. South Fayette will probably score a bit more than one point (impossible, anyway, unless we’re playing by Canadian Football League rules) in Week 1, but Mars will score one more point.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 30, Neshannock 23 — The Trojans begin the season with a pretty good test.

Good thing for North Catholic it has aced plenty of exams the last few years.

The Trojans get a solid W grade in this one.

Freeport 20, Vincentian Academy 7 — The young Yellowjackets open with a road win.

Karns City 39, Brookville 7 — The Gremlins had a tough Week Zero task against Armstrong, and while they lost, they did a lot of good things.

Expect a lot more from Karns City Friday.

St. Marys 26, Moniteau 18 — This is the fifth meeting between the two schools in a little more than two seasons and the Flying Dutch and Warriors split those four meetings.

Union/A-C Valley 22, Clarion-Limestone 13 — The marriage of the Union and A-C Valley football teams begins with a victory.

Greenville 20, Slippery Rock 9 — The Rockets are still trying to find their way in a new offense.

Grove City 32, Warren 20 — Believe in the Eagles! You know I do.

Grove City rallied with 20 fourth-quarter points in Week Zero to knock off General McLane. That’s the kind of win that can propel a team throughout the season.

Summit Academy 39, Western Beaver 20 — Don’t sleep on the Knights. Their offense could be very good.
