Better than expected
With four games in three days, Butler manager Jason Wuerfel expected to go with a pitching staff by committee Monday night.
That committee was reduced to two, thanks to the outing turned in by starter James Podgorney.
Working on short rest, Podgorney pitched seven strong innings to give the BlueSox a 6-2 win over Richmond (Ind.) in Prospect League baseball at Pullman Park.
"I was really planning on it being staff day today," Wuerfel said. "But James started on a roll. I just rode him. He said his arm was feeling good."
Podgorney needed only 90 pitches to get through his seven innings. He left with a 6-1 lead, thanks to a quick start by the Butler offense.
The BlueSox scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second against Richmond starter Freddie Cabrera.
That was more than enough for Podgorney.
Derek Peluso worked the final two innings for Butler.
Perhaps more important than getting a win — Butler's fourth in the last five games — Podgorney saved a pitching staff long on work and short on arms.
"I only have five guys in the bullpen," Wuerfel said. "We've had so many injuries with our pitching staff, I've been trying to give guys rest when I can, but guys are going on short rest. Podgorney was gutsy tonight. I was only expecting four innings out of James tonight."
Wuerfel said after Podgorney and Peluso, he was going to have to turn to position players to finish the game.
It didn't come to that.
Now the BlueSox have two days off to get the staff back on track.
Zachary Noonan went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Brian Youchak, Jacke Healy and Sean Gusrang — the 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup — also had two hits apiece.
Healy, though, made his biggest impact on defense. The shortstop made six stellar plays in the field, including one in which he ranged to the second-base side of the bag to record an out.
Wuerfel didn't think Healey was going to play in Butler this summer. He thought Healey would be selected in the Major League Baseball draft.
"For whatever reason, he wasn't," Wuerfel said. "Everyone could see he had all the tools. It was just a matter of him getting confidence."
