Leona May Blackburn
Leona May Hindman Blackburn, 93, of Kittanning went to her heavenly home Thursday at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 30, 1913, in Kittanning, she was the oldest daughter of Robert L. and Marjorie Helm Hindman.
She purchased the Christian Book and Gift Shops in Kittanning in 1953 and operated it, along with the Butler store, which she purchased in 1963, until her retirement in 1975. She was a member of the Kittanning Soroptimist Club.
Having had enough of retirement, she began volunteering at ACMH Hospital in 1976 and continued there until September 2006, logging more than 18,000 hours of volunteer work with the auxiliary. She worked as chairman of the snack bar, and with the preparation of hospital bazaar dinners, baking fresh biscuits and cakes for strawberry shortcake for the Hospital Auxiliary Week, and, in more recent years, operating the snack bar cash register.
A life-long member of the West Glade Run Presbyterian Church, she had many roles including Sunday school teacher and superintendent, ordained elder, choir member, and church treasurer. In addition, she cooked for countless dinners and always looked for ways to improve the church.
She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Davis of Alcoa, Tenn., Phyllis (Thomas) Beale of Butler, and Kathleen (Joseph)Wilson of Worthington; a brother, Frank Hindman of Worthington; a sister, Ruth Otterman of Jacksonville, Fla., a sister-in-law, LaRue Hindman of Kittanning; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who affectionately knew her as "Aunt Oney."
Preceding her in death were brothers, PaulR. and Glenn Hindman, and sisters, Eleanor Smith and Ann Boylestein.
<B>Blackburn</B> — Friends of Leona May Hindman Blackburn, who died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, will be received from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home</B> in Worthington.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at West Glade Run Presbyterian Church.Additional visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services with the Rev. John Snyder, and her nephew, Robert Hindman, officiating.Burial will be at the West Glade Run Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the memorial fund of the West Glade Run Presbyterian Church, RD 3, Kittanning PA 16001.
