Camp Huff-n-Puff slated Aug. 7 to 10

It's designed for kids with asthma

CRANBERRY TWP — Breathe Pennsylvania, headquartered in the township, will hold its 30th Camp Huff-n-Puff Aug. 7 to 10.

The annual camp, held at Jumonville Camp and Retreat Center in Uniontown, is designed for children ages 8 to 13 who have asthma.

The camp is intended to be fun, but also teaches children about managing their condition, said Camp Director Marianne Drevna, a licensed respiratory therapist.

The first day, campers and parents will hear presentations from medical experts including an allergist and a dietitian. They will learn about managing their condition through use of different medications, instruments such as spacers and peak flow meters and dietary and lifestyle choices.

“The goal is to do the education piece and reinforce it throughout the weekend, by the adults randomly asking them questions,” Drevna said.

Camp activities will include archery, swimming and rock climbing, all of which are supervised by the Jumonville Camp staff. There is also a planned visit from members of the Pittsburgh Passion women’s football team.

The camp will also be staffed by Breathe Pennsylvania staff and volunteers. The volunteers include doctors and nurses who check the children twice a day to ensure they are taking their medication and they feel well. The camp is also currently accepting applications for volunteers.

The tuition for the camp is $150, though scholarships and discounts are available based on financial need. There are about 60 available spots.

Though the camp has existed for 30 years, the organization still works hard to spread the word through doctors and schools. Because new children are diagnosed with asthma all the time, there will always be a need to educate children about managing their condition through programs like the camp, Drevna said.

Breathe Pennsylvania is the only organization of its kind in the Pittsburgh area. It serves 10 counties and organizes programs to educate the public about lung health.
