Spangler closes out victories
Two nights. Two cities. Two more dominating performances.
Seneca Valley graduate Zach Spangler picked up a pair of saves over the weekend for Butler in Prospect League action, closing out a 3-2 win at Terre Haute Saturday and then shutting the door in a 5-2 win over Richmond Sunday.
Spangler now has a league-leading 10 saves.
Spangler, a sidewinder who is a freshman at Kent State University, has struck out 12 in 11 1/3 innings of work this season and lowered his ERA to 0.77.
David Marcus provided a jolt to the BlueSox offense in both games.
Marcus blasted his third home run of the season Sunday against Richmond and went 3-for-5 to raise his average to .373.
Marcus also doubled in Sunday’s victory and added a pair of doubles in Saturday’s victory.
Another Seneca Valley grad picked up the win on the mound against Terre Haute.
Connor Coward went 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two runs against the Rex.
Josh LaPiana went seven innings, striking out six and surrendering two runs — one earned — against Richmond to get the win.
Butler (13-14) is off today and will host Richmond at Kelly Automotive Park Tuesday.
