Alton J. Phipps
Alton J. Phipps, 91, of Sherman Avenue, East Butler, died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday at the Butler Veteran's Affairs Medical Center.
Born Nov. 14, 1915, in Girard, Texas, he was the son of Claude E. Phipps and Ethel O'Neill.
Mr. Phipps was a retired supervisor for Leon Creek Power Plant. He was very active as a layman in churches in Texas, Indiana and Arkansas. He was a member of North Main Street Church of God. He was a member of the 60 Plus and the Keenagers Sunday school class. He and his wife, Dorothy, served at The North Main Street Church of God as ministers of visitation.
Mr. Phipps was a veteran of the Air Corps and World War II.
Mr. Phipps is survived by his wife, Dorothy A. Sweet Phipps, whom he married on Aug. 9, 1940; a son, the Rev. A.C. and Nita Phipps of Troy, Mich.; a grandson, the Rev. Ryan and Andrea Phipps of Pittsburgh; three sisters, Mrs. Geneva Davis of San Antonia, Texas, Mrs. Claudine Strackbein of Cedar Park, Texas, and Mrs. Betty Lou Waymer of Georgetown, Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by a brother.
<B>PHIPPS</B>— Friends of Alton J. Phipps, who died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St.Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. A.C. Phipps of the Evanswood Church of God, Troy, Mich.; and the Rev. Ryan Phipps of Discovery Christian Church, Southside Campus; and the Rev. David Brown and the Rev. Kenneth Hall of The North Main Street Church of God officiating.Burial will follow in Gruenwald Cemetery.
