When Jim Boldy, 72, and his wife both were about to have knee-replacement surgery in July 2009, they shut the bakery down for what was to be a temporary break. Then came devastating news for the couple: Anna Margaret Boldy was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. She died that August, after only two chemotherapy treatments.

He stayed in the kitchen of the couple’s business, Boldy's Homemade Goodies, but in the role as mentor, especially to Elizabeth King, whom he was coaching to take over the business in December 2009. He coached her in the preparation of the doughnuts, cookies, pastries and pies that the bakery’s loyal customers crave.

Boldy was not simply handing over a bakery business, but the legacy he built with his wife of 51 years. The couple’s photo hung above the counter and Anna Margaret's presence was still tasted in her recipes that continued to flow from the kitchen she loved.

“She really enjoyed baking,” Boldy said. “She was gifted really. She would take dough and make it into something miraculous. I’m really happy to see it still going on.”
