Take care as winter weather begins to impact county
Winter has finally come to Butler County as the region experienced its first significant snowfall of the season Tuesday morning. Whether you’re a fan of the white stuff or not, there are some things to keep in mind when it starts to come down:
Don’t drive if you don’t have to and if you have no choice, exercise extra caution.
A Butler County Emergency Services representative reported the office had gotten calls for about 100 incidents related to crashes within a four-hour period Tuesday morning. While the representative didn’t report any really serious crashes, it still illustrates the need to be vigilant and smart to stay safe.
If you have to drive, watch your speed. While it may take a bit longer to reach your destination, slowing down a little can make sure you make it there at all.
Clear snow off your vehicle — not just the windows, but the roof, hood and rear areas as well. Doing so not only ensures snow slipping or blowing around won’t impair your own vision, but keeps it from landing on other vehicles and impairing their drivers’ ability to see.
It’s important to be vigilant off the road as well. Making sure sidewalks are clear and free of ice around your home can ensure both your safety and that of others. And the sooner snow can be cleared the better. Foot traffic over snow compacts it and soon you’ll be dealing with caked ice rather than just snow.
These and other simple precautions can ensure both your safety and that of those around you throughout the winter season.
