Liquor license application pending for Cranberry Costco

On the heels of new grocery store chains, Wegmans and Meijer, moving into Cranberry Township, existing retailer Costco is seeking to expand its offerings.

The warehouse club recently submitted a formal application for a liquor license, according to Ron Henshaw, Cranberry’s director of planning and development services.

That license would be transferred to the business from the former Houlihan's restaurant in the Streets of Cranberry that closed in August 2023.

“The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board does the transfer, but we also have a process that sort of piggybacks off of that,” Henshaw said. “Our board of supervisors has the authority to authorize the transfer.”

Henshaw said supervisors will vote on the transfer at their Dec. 11 meeting following a public hearing.

“There’s no reason to believe there’s any issue that would be heard at the hearing or anything like that,” he said.

Despite the name, restaurant licenses are the most common type of liquor license held in Pennsylvania and are the type usually used by grocery and convenience stores that carry alcohol, according to the PA Liquor License Company, which specializes in obtaining licenses for businesses seeking to sell alcohol in the state.

Costco has two other locations in the Greater Pittsburgh area, one in Homestead and another in Robinson, both in Allegheny County.
