Iron Mountain tenant Etzel Engineering & Build receives Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence

Pennsylvania Secretary of Labor and Industry Nancy Walker talks about why Etzel was chosen as one of this year's four recipients of the Governor's Award for Safety Excellence at the Iron Mountain Visitors Center, Friday, Nov. 21. Matthew Brown/Butler Eagle

Etzel Engineering & Build was one of four companies to receive the Governor's Award for Safety Excellence this year.

According to Etzel general superintendent and safety officer Eric Dumbaugh, they have to meet OSHA safety standards, deep mine safety regulations due to Iron Mountain’s location, and Iron Mountain’s own safety rules.

Dumbaugh said Iron Mountain’s focus on safety has helped them elevate their own standards.

Etzel has projects in 21 states and said it strives to embrace new technology to improve safety, including hard hats with a Twiceme function that you can tap your phone to and get access to any medical information that might be pertinent if someone gets hurt on a job site.

“We started out as a very small company and in all relation, we still are a small company. We have 37 employees. So this is a huge achievement for us,” Christine Schuster, office manager with Etzel, said.
