The first loss of the season for Butler County Community College women’s volleyball was an incredibly tough pill to swallow.

The Pioneers were tied with DuPage (Iowa) at two sets apiece in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III quarterfinals Thursday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

BC3, the No. 3 seed, had the upper hand in the fifth set with a 13-9 edge, but No. 6 DuPage took seven of the final eight points and earned a trip to the national semifinals with a 3-2 victory. Set scores were 20-25, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22 and 14-16.

The Pioneers (23-1) will face No. 2 Minnesota West in the consolation round at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

In Thursday morning’s first round, BC3 swept Westchester Community College (N.Y.) by scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-18.

Josie Russo tallied 14 kills for the Pioneers, and Anora Robare contributed 34 assists and 11 digs.
