Rock water polo sweeps at invite
A-C Valley graduate Amanda Zychowski recorded seven goals, two assists and eight steals to lead the Slippery Rock University women's water polo team to a three-game sweep at the Grove City Invitational Saturday.
Erika Brunner added five goals, seven assists and nine steals and Beth Choike and Amie Marshall each had four goals, three assists and five steals.
SRU (12-18) defeated Connecticut College 12-5, the University of Pittsburgh club team 14-4 and Grove City 7-4.
The Rock dropped a pair of games to Indiana (Pa.) 5-2 and 8-5 on Saturday, their sixth consecutive setback.SRU is on the verge of being eliminated from contention for a PSAC playoff berth.Alicia Dixon had a two-run single in the opener for SRU (22-16, 6-10) and Jesse Gump added a double and Andrea Murdock had a single to account for the squad's three hits.In the nightcap, Gump, Murdock and Stacey Rhoades each had a pair of hits.
J.D. Lowry smacked a two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning to plate the tying and winning runs in SRU's 8-6 second-game win over Shippensburg to complete a comeback that erased a 6-0 third-inning deficit.Lowry also had a pair of singles in that game as well as the first game, which The Rock (25-11) lost 9-0.Todd Schicking added a two-run single and, along with Lowry and Dave Gonos, had two RBI.
