Lernerville hosting Silver Cup races
BUFFALO TWP — Danny Holtgraver made a name for himself at last year’s Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup race at Lernerville Speedway.
A format change denied him a championship.
The 23-year-old driver from Pittsburgh won the Sprint points title at Lernerville in 2010. At last year’s Martin Memorial, he started from the 19th position twice in the twin 30-lap features, finishing second in one race and 10th in the other.
Holtgraver had the best average finishers among all the drivers. But to win the Silver Cup, a driver must win one of the two features. That was a format change after Donny Schatz won the Silver Cup in 2010 without winning either feature.
Schatz finished second and fourth, respectively, that year.
“Knowing the track here definitely helps,” Holtgraver said of his performance last season.
No longer a regular at Lernerville, Holtgraver will likely be among the field of cars Tuesday night when the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Twin 30’s return to the Sarver oval.
Gates open at 5 p.m. Time trials begin at 7:15 p.m., racing at 8 p.m.
Holtgraver has continued a successful run against stellar competition since last year’s Silver Cup event. He won the All-Star Circuit of Champions feature here in September and claimed an all-star feature win recently at Mercer Raceway Park.
The World of Outlaws Sprint series has enjoyed a prosperous history at Lernerville. Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell have combined for 34 WoO feature wins at the Sarver track, but neither has won here in five years.
There have been 25 different drivers win WoO Sprint features at Lernerville. The lone local driver to do so was Ed Lynch Jr., who won the Silver Cup in 2002.
Mark Kinser owns the most Silver Cup wins with five. Schatz has won three — all since 2006 — and Swindell owns three Silver Cup crowns.
Craig Dollansky and Tony Stewart won the 30-lap features in last year’s event. Dollansky earned the Silver Cip by finishing 16th in the other feature compared to Stewart’s 19th-place showing.
Daryn Pitman has never won an Outlaws feature at Lernerville, but owns the WoO points lead so far this season. He has six WoO wins on the campaign and has a 138-pouint lead over Paul McMahan. Schatz is in in third place, 174 points back.
Schatz leads the WoO with nine feature wins in 2013.
Lynch has won the features in his only two appearances at Lernerville this season. Jack Sodeman Jr. has won twice this season at the Sarver track as well.
Joey Saldana owns the Lernerville track record in time trials, turning a lap in 12.334 seconds in May of 2002.
