WPIAL, District 9 football playoffs final scores, recaps: Freeport, Union/A-C Valley win, plus Seneca Valley soccer finals

Mars' Ayden Yocum (4) celebrates his touchdown with Brady Brennan (20) during a football game against Hampton on Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at Mars Athletic Complex. Mars won 49-10. Ralph LoVuolo/Special to the Eagle

It’s win or go home. Simple as that.

Five Butler County teams were good enough after 10 weeks to make the PIAA district football playoffs. Four of them play this week. In a couple hours, we’ll know who will survive to play another week.

The Butler Eagle will be at four games this week — Beaver at Freeport (John Enrietto), Mars at Thomas Jefferson (Brendan Howe) and Cameron County at Union/A-C Valley (Aidan Treu). Follow this page for updates and scores from those games and all the rest throughout the night. This year, Eagle sports editor Jake Merda Adams will post updates and highlights along with scores from kickoff to the final whistle.

9:37 p.m.: Freeport, Union/A-C Valley advance; Karns City’s opponent set; Mars’ season ends

There will be four Butler County playoff teams next week. Union/A-C Valley dominated Cameron County 42-12 to make the D9 semifinals, and Freeport hung on against Beaver 35-27 to set its date with Avonworth in the WPIAL 3A quarterfinals next week.

Mars is the only local team that will not play next week, falling 31-14 to Thomas Jefferson in the WPIAL 4A quarterfinals.

Karns City, which had a bye in the D8/9 subregional semifinals, will face familiar foe Central Clarion in the final, likely next week. CC dominated Perry 56-8.

And North Catholic locked things up with a 56-21 win over Burrell to advance to the WPIAL 3A quarters.

More to come on butlereagle.com later tonight from these games.

9:35 p.m.: Beaver has one last shot against Freeport

The Yellowjackets couldn’t drain the entire clock, punting with 1:23 left in the game. Beaver, down 35-27, takes over at its own 2 and must drive 98 yards with no timeouts and convert a two-point conversion.

9:31 p.m.: What do the playoff matchups look like next week?

Assuming scores hold, No. 4 Thomas Jefferson will beat No. 5 Mars and face juggernaut and top seed McKeesport, which thumped Chartiers Valley 44-7, in next week’s WPIAL 4A semis.

No. 5 North Catholic is going to face fourth-seed Elizabeth Forward, which had a bye, in the 3A quarterfinals. And No. 8 Freeport will face favorite Avonworth, the 1 seed, next week.

No. 2 Union/A-C Valley, in the District 9 1A playoffs, will advance to the semis and face Redbank Valley, which popped Ridgway 51-19.

9:27 p.m.: Beaver gets within 8, but Freeport converts key third down

Drew Ross ran for a first down on third-and-9, and the game is inside 3 minutes left. Freeport leads 35-27 after Beaver kicked its second field goal of the night.

9:17 p.m.: Freeport putting clamps on Beaver in second half

We’ve talked a lot about the Yellowjackets’ offensive firepower all season, and tonight it’s a different character taking some of the shine. Dawson Gaillot scored on a 45-yard rush with 9:25 left to make it 35-24 Freeport.

Minutes later, Drew Ross recorded his latest defensive INT, and the ‘Jackets can salt this game away.

9:07 p.m.: Seneca Valley-Fox Chapel WPIAL boys soccer championship tied

It’s 0-0 halfway through the first half in the WPIAL Class 4A final.

9:04 p.m.: Amos Glenn, are you kidding me?!?!

John brought up a good point in “Eye on Sports” this week when I yelled teams need to stop kicking to Freeport’s Amos Glenn. He said high school kickers aren’t as accurate as the pros. Fair point. I stand corrected.

But Glenn now has what we believe is his ninth special teams TD of the year, returning a punt 56 yards to the house to give Freeport the lead. Beaver got a field goal on the next drive to make it 28-24 Yellowjackets.

I’ve never seen a return season like this.

9:01 p.m.: Jameson Garvin INT gives Mars a chance

Can the Planets mount a 24-point comeback? Jameson Garvin picked off Harrison Kolling on fourth-and-15 and returned it more than 40 yards to the TJ 30 at the end of the third quarter. Mars trailed 24-8 but can make this a one-score game with a TD and two-point conversion.

8:53 p.m.: Dawson Gaillot scores to tie things up for Freeport

The Yellowjackets now have three TDs from inside the 10 from three different players. This time it’s fullback Dawson Gaillot who takes it in from 3 yards out, keeping his feet just long enough after a defender nearly tripped him up. It’s 21-21 with 3:05 left in the third quarter.

8:51 p.m.: Max Gallagher scores his fourth, turning this game into a blowout

Backups got a handful of carries on this drive, but senior star Max Gallagher finished things off with a 1-yard TD on a direct snap, putting Union/A-C Valley up 42-12. One more score will set a running clock as the Falcon Knights are close to being able to look ahead to next week’s semifinals.

8:49 p.m.: One bad sign for North Catholic’s defense

The only blemish tonight for the Trojans has been the run defense, which has given up 194 yards and two long touchdowns of 97 and 73 yards to Antonio Perkins. To be fair, of his 12 other carries, that has equaled just 24 yards. But the defense has been a weak spot all year and will be tested going forward in the playoffs.

8:46 p.m.: Freeport falls behind Beaver, but gets big special teams play

Travis Clear scored on a 4-yard run to make it 21-14 Bobcats after they converted three third downs on a drive that lasted four-and-a-half minutes.

But Freeport has a chance to tie it back up after forcing a three-and-out and blocking the punt.

8:43 p.m.: Union/A-C Valley stops fourth-and-short, scores on next play

It’s a good start to the second half for the Falcon Knights. After stopping Cameron County on a fourth-and-1 at the 44, they then scored on the very next play when Max Gallagher split a gaping hole on the left side of the line and was untouched. It’s 35-12 about 1:30 into the game.

The Falcon Knights then forced and recovered a fumble at midfield and are threatening again.

8:33 p.m.: Logan Skibinski having a career night at the half

Courtesy of Aidan Treu: Union/A-C Valley RB Logan Skibinski has more than 250 total offensive yards, including a 79-yard TD reception and 92-yard rushing score.

In other action, Joe Felitsky hit Tommy Arth for a 3-yard TD with a second left before halftime to make it 56-14 Trojans. This game is effectively over.

8:29 p.m.: North Allegheny beats Seneca Valley girls soccer in double OT

Rosalia Varlotta broke the tie in the second overtime, giving the Tigers a dramatic 2-1 win over the Raiders in the WPIAL Class 4A girls soccer final. Both teams make the PIAA tournament starting Tuesday; those brackets will be announced Sunday.

The SV boys game against Fox Chapel will likely begin around 9, nearly an hour after its original start time.

8:26 p.m.: Mars halftime stats, trailing 24-8

From Brendan Howe:

Jaguars: QB Harrison Kolling — 8-12, 150 yds., 2 TDs; RB Tyler Eber — 24 car., 105 yds., TD; WR Kane Eggerton — 5 rec., 112 yds., 2 TDs

Planets: QB Colin Yurisinec — 4/12, 113 yds. TD; RB Ayden Yocum — 5 car., 7 yds.; WR Gabe Hein — 1 rec., 88 yds.,TD

8:17 p.m.: Mars finally gets a first down, and then some

The Planets are finally on the board with 1:09 left in the half. Colin Yurisinec hit Smyth Dunaway on third-and-10 for the team’s first first down of the night, then he connected on an 88-yard bomb to Gabe Hein for a TD. Jameson Garvin ran in the two-point conversion, making it 24-8 Thomas Jefferson.

8:07 p.m.: North Catholic might as well book its trip to the quarterfinals

It’s 42-7 after Preston Simko caught his first TD of the night for the Trojans. He had one called back earlier. This one, official, went for 21 yards on a screen pass where his blockers opened up loads of daylight in front of him. Should the 35-point lead stand (it’s 5:55 left before halftime), a running clock will trigger in the second half.

8:04 p.m.: Mars in all sorts of trouble in quarterfinals

Harrison Kolling has hit Kane Eggerton for two touchdown passes of 19 yards and 29 yards, the second on a fourth-and-6 with 5:14 to go before halftime. Thomas Jefferson is running away with this one, 24-0. Per Brendan Howe, the Planets have just 7 (!!!) yards of offense.

8:00 p.m.: Freeport tied at the break with Beaver, North Catholic in command

Amos Glenn has 10 carries for 56 yards and a score, and Drew Ross is 3 of 8 passing for 58 yards and a rushing TD as the Yellowjackets head into halftime tied 14-14 in their 8-9 matchup.

A 2-yard run by Greene has North Catholic up 35-7 on Burrell now with 9:06 still to go before halftime.

And now Union/A-C Valley adds to the updates with Max Gallagher’s second TD run of the night. That’s two apiece for Gallagher and Logan Skibinski. That duo has been electric this season.

7:57 p.m.: And Cameron County has some life

Union/A-C Valley was a play or two away from making it a 22-point game, but Andrew Kifer’s short pass was intercepted and returned by the Raiders nearly 90 yards for an touchdown. The two-point conversion was stopped, keeping it a two-score game, but that’s 12 straight points by CC.

7:49 p.m.: North Catholic extends lead more, Freeport can’t convert INT into points, Mars falling behind

Ryker Kennedy caught a short rollout pass from Joe Felitsky, and the Trojans are in command 28-7 with 10:26 left in the half.

Freeport turned Beaver over, tipping a pass and picking it off, but a 32-yard field goal attempt was no good. So the Yellowjackets remain ahead 14-7 with 5:40 left.

And Mars has yet to record a first down, per Brendan Howe, and now trail 17-0. The 4-5 matchup in Class 4A was expected to be close but is getting away from the Planets early.

7:34 p.m.: Soccer update - Seneca Valley girls tied with NA late in the game

It took nearly 70 minutes for a score, and Maddie Marcotte provided the spark to give Seneca Valley a 1-0 lead in the WPIAL Class 4A final. But North Allegheny responded four minutes later to tie it 1-1.

7:32 p.m.: Logan Schade, Max Gallagher extend NC and U/ACV’s leads

After the Falcon Knights stood tall in the red zone to force a turnover on downs, fullback Max Gallagher ripped off a 96-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 Union/A-C Valley at the start of the second quarter.

The Trojans took little time to respond to Burrell’s first score, driving back down the field for Logan Schade to punch one in from 6 yards out to make it 21-7 late first.

7:26 p.m.: Falcon Knights turn over a turnover, giving Cameron County ball inside the 10

You don’t see this every day. The Raiders faced a fourth-and-long and threw deep on what was effectively an arm punt. A Union/A-C Valley defender came down with the pick down the right sideline, but the ball was stripped and Cameron County recovered the turnover inside U/ACV’s 10-yard line with a chance to cut into the 13-0 deficit.

7:24 p.m.: Amos Glenn puts Freeport ahead, Mars holds TJ to field goal

It’s a high-scoring game at Freeport so far. After a Drew Ross QB keeper and a Beaver response, Amos Glenn has the Yellowjackets back up after a TD run of about 10 yards with 3:46 left in the first quarter.

Elsewhere, Sam Wessel put the Jaguars up on Mars 3-0 after a 16-play drive killed nearly 8 minutes off the clock, per reporter Brendan Howe.

7:09 p.m.: Felitsky-Waskiewicz connection puts North Catholic up early; Union/A-C Valley trying to go up two scores

A busted coverage on the Trojans’ first drive has North Catholic in command of Burrell early. QB Joe Felitsky hit Will Waskiewicz from 9 yards out on an RPO play that left Waskiewicz wide open on the quick slant to walk into the end zone just 2:46 into the game.

The 5-12 matchup is at J.C. Stone Field.

In District 9, Logan Skibinski has scored twice in the opening 5 minutes, the first breaking free for a nearly 80-yard TD pass from Andrew Kifer. Skibinski went deep, and no Cameron County defender gave chase. Skibinski then followed with a TD run on the next drive from inside the 5-yard line (the conversion was stopped) to make it 13-0.

7:06 p.m.: The playoffs are under way!

We’ll have coverage from Seneca Valley soccer’s WPIAL championship games, but playoff football has kicked off across the WPIAL, District 9 and District 10.
