Woman charged with stealing political sign from SRU campus
A Texas woman is charged with theft after removing a political sign from Slippery Rock University grounds, police said.
Grace Kathleen McGrew, 18, of Kingwood, Texas, was charged Tuesday, Oct. 21, with one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property following an Oct. 15 incident.
SRU police said they were dispatched to a courtyard near the Smith Student Center for the theft report and encountered McGrew holding a Turning Point USA sign.
Police spoke with a Turning Point USA representative who was working at the organization’s tent set up on campus. The representative said McGrew took the sign, folded it in half and refused to give it back.
Another representative said the sign was valued at $20.
McGrew reportedly told police she took the sign because she believes the organization is destructive to minority communities, and she did not feel comfortable speaking to the Turning Point USA representatives.
McGrew’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Dec. 4 before District Judge Joseph Nash.
