High school sports roundup: North Catholic places 7th at PIAA golf championships
A day after finishing 12th in the individual state tournament, Riley Kontul led North Catholic with a 2-over 74 in the PIAA Class 2A Girls Golf Team Championships at Penn State Golf Courses.
Kontul birded Nos. 8, 10, 14 and 16, the latter two on par-3s. Izzy Engleka shot a 97 and Allie Gruseck a 103 to give the Trojanettes a total of 274 to finish seventh.
West Middlesex won the team title with a 237. The boys 2A gold went to Scranton Prep, which shot an impressive 6-under 282. The 3A titles went to Unionville boys (286) and Conestoga girls (228).
Adi Novad recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, pushing Slippery Rock into the District 10 Class 3A semifinals in a tight 3-0 sweep of Meadville.
Madison Romanovich added nine kills as the Rockets (17-2) won by scores of 25-22, 26-24, 25-20. Ashley Ragan had three blocks and an ace, and Lexi Caldwell dished out 20 assists with one service ace.
North Catholic 3, Kiski Area 0 — The No. 6 Trojanettes advance to Saturday’s WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals. No other stats were available.
No. 2 Bethel Park shut out No. 7 Mars 2-0 to advance to the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals against third-seed Franklin Regional.
