Controlled burn catches firefighters, property owners off guard
LANCASTER TWP — Harmony firefighters battled an attempted controlled burn that got out of hand Tuesday night in the township.
At about 6:30 p.m., neighbors and passers-by reported seeing smoke and flame from a structure at 336 Littlecreek Road.
Harmony Fire District Chief Scott Goehring said by the time his crews arrived, firefighters found a group of five interconnected, rudimentary sheds built of scrap material, engulfed in flames.
“They (the homeowners) were attempting to remove them from the property,” Goehring said. “They lit one component on fire and it spread rapidly.”
Goehring said neither the firefighters nor the homeowners were injured.
Lancaster Township police also responded to the scene.
