Time was what were known as the "Blue Laws" prohibited stores to be open for business on Sundays.When you are as old as I you may recall that retail businesses did not come close to being open as much as they are today. My father sold firniture and appliances for forty years and that store was open nine to five through the week and nine to nine on Saturday. I think banks used to close at three in the afternoon, no? When I worked at the G.C. Murphy store in Grove City we were open nine to five through the week, nine to nine on Friday and Saturday. In the summer we closed at noon on Wednesday. I may not be totally accurate with those times but after all that was fifty five years ago. Of course I put in more hours than that, having to be there an hour before opening and then after closing we had to read all the registers (no computers then) and take the money to the bank depository.

One of the individuals that challenged the Blue Laws was a fellow by the name of Vercharen (sp) He had an operation on Route 51 outside of Pittsburgh and opened Sundays in defiance of the law.
