Football fortunes look good
Well, well, well, we have an exciting slate of games this week, don’t we?
The best part is we get to start it all a day early again as Knoch hosts Franklin Regional tonight.
We have a pretty good idea what is up with Butler County football teams.
So, what is up, you ask?
The fortunes of county football teams, that’s what.
There’s a chance that 10 of the 12 teams could make the playoffs in their respective districts this year.
That’s good for Butler County.
Know what else is good? My picks. I was 8-4 last week and have a respectable 41-15 mark this season.
Here’s what I see happening:
Franklin Regional 22, Knoch 17 — The Knights suffered their first loss of the season last week against Hampton.
It’s quite possible Knoch could lose again tonight against Franklin Regional. That would be the first time since 2009 the Knights have lost back-to-back games.
Upper St. Clair 41, Butler 6 — Last week it was North Allegheny and now Upper St. Clair — two quad-A powers in back-to-back weeks for the Tornado.
Seneca Valley 54, Shaler 7 — You get the feeling the Raiders could name their score against the struggling Titans.
Mars 47, Uniontown 8 — See above, except replace Raiders with Planets and Titans with Red Raiders.
Freeport 18, Burrell 15 — It’s hard to figure out these crazy Yellowjackets. They rebounded from a shocking loss to Valley with a solid win against Shady Side last week.
It’s like a gridiron version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Slippery Rock 31, Warren 25 — In a battle of unbeatens, always side with the better defense.
Karns City 33, Keystone 12 — The Gremlins are banged up, but they always play a ton of players anyway. Advantage, Karns City.
Moniteau 27, Redbank Valley 14 — The Warriors have been knocking on the door to victory. This week they walk on through.
A-C Valley 20, Brookville 19 — A win here and the Falcons will officially be for real.
Grove City 36, Saegertown 11 — The Eagles will play their third consecutive road game.
Grove City will enjoy the accommodations at winless Saegertown.
Union 30, Kennedy Catholic 16 — The Golden Knights hung tough with Clarion last week for two-plus quarters.
Union gets back on the winning track in this Saturday afternoon game.
Summit Academy 26, Deer Lakes 16 — The Knights are another tough team to crack. One week, they get shut out and don’t complete a pass. The next week, they are an offensive juggernaut in the fourth quarter in a big win.
I think Summit Academy will handle Deer Lakes.
Scoop knew all along that the Oakland A’s would win the American League West.
