CRANBERRY TWP — The proposed North Catholic High School project has moved from the planning phase to the design phase after an architecture firm in Pittsburgh released a drawing for the school.

The new Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School will be built on 71 acres along Route 228 in Cranberry, adjacent to the St. Kilian Catholic Elementary School.

Exterior schematic designs released by Astorino Architects and Engineers show that a chapel will be built in the center of the large school. The building also will contain two levels of classrooms and other usual amenities such as a gymnasium, library and auditorium.

Diocese Secretary of Education Father Kris Stubna said the diocese is working with Astorino to finalize schematic designs for the interior of the school, a process he hopes is finished by the end of October.

The project for a school for more than 1,000 students is expected to cost about $60 million.

Stubna also said diocese officials will meet with the Cranberry planning commission on Monday to discuss the project. He offered no timeline on when the diocese will submit formal plans to the township.

Church officials have said they plan to have the school ready for the 2013-14 school year.
