Freeport football sacked by Hopewell as Drew Ross battles through injury, Amos Glenn scores twice

BUFFALO TWP — When healthy, Freeport quarterback Drew Ross is a dual threat who adds another dimension to the team’s potent offense. But the senior has been nursing a right ankle injury since a Week 4 win over Deer Lakes.

Against Hopewell on Friday, the Vikings feasted on his compromised mobility, sacking Ross eight times as the Yellowjackets fell for the second straight week, 48-20 at Freeport Stadium.

Ross also played defensive back in the game. He wore a brace around the ankle and was not relieved by backup Danny King until Freeport’s third drive of the second half with the ’Jackets trailing 28-7.

Without the usual zip on his throws, Ross completed five passes for 22 yards.

“He’s a competitor and wants to be out there,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said of Ross.

“Hopewell is a very physical team. All those teams from Beaver County are physical. I didn’t prepare us well enough, and that’s on me.”

Freeport (6-2) was productive at the start of the game. Aided by several Hopewell penalties, the Yellowjackets took an early lead when Ross hit Chace Flynn on a 6-yard scoring toss midway through the first quarter.

But the Vikings (6-2) responded immediately. Nasir Wade’s 66-yard scamper set up quarterback James Armstrong’s 4-yard run.

Wade finished the game with 179 yards and two rushing touchdowns, including one from 53 yards out in the second period that had the Vikings leading 14-7 at halftime.

But the team’s passing attack came to life in the third quarter, accounting for two of Hopewell’s three scores in a span of just three minutes that blew the game open.

Tre Cameron scored from 83 yards after hauling in a pass on a post route. Freeport’s three-and-out led to another long scoring run from Wade.

Amos Glenn gave Freeport a boost with a 73-yard kickoff return, but King, in his first series at quarterback, was intercepted at Hopewell’s 8 by Zander Muzy. On the very next play, the Vikings completed a 68-yard scoring pass on an end-around from Kingston Krotec to Avery Bokor, making it 35-7 with six minutes left in the third.

“Freeport plays a lot of man coverage,” Hopewell coach Matt Mottes said. “We thought we could complete some deeper balls, and we did.”

Glenn scored two late touchdowns from 46 and 40 yards, and finished the game with 130 yards on 21 carries. He had been held to 36 yards on 12 attempts in the first half.

After a 6-0 start, the Yellowjackets are now searching for confidence with two Allegheny 7 Conference games remaining — at home next Friday against East Allegheny and on the road against defending conference champion Imani Christian.

“Next week is a must-win for us, that’s how we’re looking at it,” Gaillot said. “We may have to make some changes, and will start working on it tomorrow.”
