High school sports roundup: North Catholic girls soccer’s Simone Sharpless scores 100th of career in blowout
It did not take long for Simone Sharpless to reach the century mark.
One minute into Wednesday’s girls soccer game at Valley, the North Catholic senior scored her 100th career goal. The Trojanettes went on to rout Valley 13-1.
“Reaching 100 goals feels incredible!” Sharpless said via text after the game. “This milestone shows that all of my hard work has paid off. It’s a memory I'll always cherish. I'm so glad I can contribute to the team's success, which wouldn't have been possible without my amazing teammates!”
North improved to 12-4 (7-3 WPIAL Section 2-2A) against the winless Vikings and hosts Pine-Richland on Monday in the regular-season finale.
Mars 10, Penn Hills 0 — Liv Halliday scored twice in the Planets’ blowout victory, the only one with multiple goals. Mars (11-3-1, 7-2-1 Section 1-3A) has won four of its last five and faces Obama Academy on Monday.
North Allegheny 4, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado fell to 1-6-1 in Section 3-4A play (6-8-1 overall) ahead of Saturday’s non-section road game against Knoch. No other stats were provided.
Freeport 3, Knoch 0 — Camryn Woods scored two more goals this season, and Nia Disanti added the other for the Yellowjackets (13-1, 9-0 Section 2-2A). Alyssa Alcorn got the shutout in net, and Peyton Los and Elena Jenkins each had an assist against the Knights (3-10-1, 2-7-1).
No. 2 North Catholic swept No. 15 Blackhawk 5-0 in the WPIAL Class 2A Girls Tennis Team Tournament first round Wednesday.
The Trojanettes host No. 7 Indiana, 4-1 winners over Burrell in another first-round match, at 3 p.m. Thursday at Cranberry Township Park. The winner advances to Monday’s semifinal against either Sewickley Academy or Winchester Thurston.
Hailey Long crossed the finish line in 19:20.00, winning the MAC Championship individual girls title.
Mars’ girls finished seventh in the team standings with 140 points; Moon won with 41.
Colton Rearick led Mars’ boys, who finished sixth with 158 points, with an 18th-place finish in 17:32.90. Quaker Valley won the boys meet with 45 points.
