PITTSBURGH — State police say a 19-year-old Pittsburgh-area man was driving 106 mph on Interstate 376 west of the city before he lost control of the car which plunged down a hillside killing three of his friends.

State police have an arrest warrant for Ryan Safka, of Upper St. Clair, in the crash on Feb. 21. Police say there was no evidence Safka was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, only that he was driving too fast. The car was still traveling 64 mph over the embankment, in a 50 mph zone.

The Associated Press could not immediately locate a telephone number for Safka, who is charged with three counts each of homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and lesser charges.

The crash killed 20-year-old Derek Phillips, of Bethel Park, 20-year-old David Rizzo Jr. and 18-year-old Tara Schulz, both of Upper St. Clair.
