High school sports roundup: North Catholic girls, Seneca Valley boys win golds at cross country invites
The North Catholic girls won the Brown Race at Saturday’s Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational with a score of 107, besting 39 other teams. Madeline Meeuf led the Trojanettes with a 12th-place finish in 19:07.
NC’s top five runners finished in the top 40 overall, with Caroline Sell running a 19:09.40 for 14th, Anna Morris a 19:18.90 (18th), Sydney Dunn a 19:40.80 (25th) and Tessa Driehorst a 20:03.90 (38th).
On the boys’ side, Tyler Carroll led the Trojans, who finished 11th as a team with 415 points, with a fourth-place finish and time of 15:53.50.
John Sample Invitational — Knoch’s Carter French won the boys portion of the Grove City-hosted weekend meet, crossing the finish line in 16:11.80, but Seneca Valley claimed the team title with 78 points over Grove City’s 112.
And Slippery Rock’s girls placed second with 137 points behind Altoona (98). Kasey Yeager finished 12th (20:05.10), Leah Perez 13th (20:07.70) and Lydia Springirth 18th (20:24.40).
Mars’ Hailey Long claimed fifth in the girls race in 19:17.40; the Planets came in 13th. Seneca Valley’s Siena Varlotta placed 30th in 20:54.90, leading the Raiders to a sixth-place finish. Knoch’s Natalie Zolinas was 11th in 19:58.
On the boys’ end, Mars finished sixth (190 points), Knoch 11th and Slippery Rock 20th. Riley McGee paced the Raiders with a fifth-place finish in 16:31.3. Teammates Ian Wahl (12th, 16:54.60), Hunter Peterson (13th, 16:58.30) and Jackson McClune (18th, 17:16.40) followed with top-20 finishes.
Mars’ Colton Rearick led the Planets with a time of 17:17.40 to finish 19th. Knoch’s Connor McCool came in 29th (17:35.80), and Hunter Dorflinger led Slippery Rock in 17:56.80 for 48th.
Adi Novad had nine kills and 18 digs in Slippery Rock’s 3-0 win (26-24, 25-21, 26-24) over Moniteau.
Lexi Caldwell dished out 26 assists and added 11 digs and two aces.
Emily Matz had 10 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and an ace for Moniteau. Sayge Brunst had seven kills and eight digs; Maddy Eury had 15 assists, three digs and two aces.
Symir Newkirk threw for 107 yards and a touchdown to D Crosby on 9 of 17 passing, but Summit Academy lost Friday 63-8 to Laurel to fall to 1-6.
Crosby had three catches for 51 yards and two rushes for 14 yards.
