Mars graduate David Bednar helps send New York Yankees to ALDS
Mars graduate and New York Yankees relief pitcher David Bednar closed out his team’s 4-0 win over the rival Boston Red Sox in a do-or-die Game 3 of the American League Wild Card.
It marked the third straight game that Bednar had pitched in for the Yankees, who advance to take on the AL East foe Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Divisional round.
Working with a 4-0 lead, Bednar entered in the top half of the ninth inning. He walked Alex Bregman before inducing a ground ball fielder’s choice by Masataka Yoshida.
Bednar fanned Ceddanne Rafaela on four pitches, then Nathaniel Lowe fouled out to third.
In a 4-3 Game 2 win, Bednar earned his first postseason save, striking out Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Durran before getting Rafaela to fly out to right field.
The Yankees acquired Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates in July, sending over catcher/first basemen Rafael Flores in the trade package.
