HARRISBURG — A state representative from Lehigh County is the latest person to enter the Democratic race for state treasurer.
Representative Jennifer Mann declared her candidacy Wednesday at a news conference in the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg.
The fifth-term legislator is expected to face competition for the Democratic nod from at least two other candidates.
John Cordisco, a Bucks County lawyer and former state legislator, and Montgomery County businessman Rob McCord have already launched campaigns for the treasurer's post, which will be open next year.
PITTSBURGH — The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is planning to build a new branch in the city's Hill District.The full-service branch will be named after longtime community activist Thelma Lovette. It will occupy an entire block on Centre Avenue between Hemans, Addison and Elmore streets and is tentatively scheduled to open in the summer of 2010.The YMCA also says it plans to add 20 single-occupancy rooms to its Centre Avenue building, which now has 77 transitional housing units that are filled. It also plans to renovate parts of the 85-year-old building.The YMCA says its transitional housing historically served the city's African-American population with services denied to them from the 1920s to the 1950s.The projects are estimated to cost $8 million to $10 million.
