HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania employers added 34,000 jobs in April, the highest monthly number since 1996, although unemployment remained at its highest rate in more than a quarter century.

The state Labor and Industry Department said Friday that many of the jobs added were in professional and business services, tourism, manufacturing and the trade, transportation and utilities category.

Despite the jump in nonfarm jobs to a seasonally adjusted level of 5.6 million, the unemployment rate remained at 9 percent as more people start or resume looking for work.

That's below the national rate of 9.9 percent.

CONNELLSVILLE — A Pittsburgh-area man has surrendered to state police on charges that he kidnapped a 14-year-old girl for about two days after meeting her on the MySpace social networking website.Police say 26-year-old Richard Sabatasse of Mount Lebanon communicated with the girl for weeks before picking her up in Connellsville on May 13.The girl says Sabatasse refused to let her make phone calls or give her food while they traveled in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia before he dropped her at home Sunday morning.Sabatasse is jailed, but had been free awaiting sentencing for corruption of minors and indecent assault in a 2006 incident involving a 15-year-old girl.

ALLENPORT — A 13-year-old boy has died after losing control of his all-terrain vehicle.State police say the crash happened Thursday afternoon in Allenport, about 25 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.Police say Michael Keegan of Allenport was traveling fast on the ATV and failed to negotiate a curve, hitting a guard rail.Police say the ATV rolled and Keegan hit a tree. Keegan was not wearing a helmet.

WASHINGTON — A high school teacher has been removed from the classroom over allegations that he "sexted" an 18-year-old female student.Trinity School District Superintendent Paul Kasunich said the incident is being investigated internally and was referred to the state police. No charges have been filed and Kasunich says the school's investigation is continuing.Kasunich told the school board Thursday night that officials learned of the "inappropriate communications" sometime in the previous two days."Sexting" is sending sexually suggestive messages or pictures using a cell phone.

PITTSBURGH — Police are trying to figure out who fired several shots outside a Pittsburgh hospital, including one that went through the window of a patient's room.Police and UPMC Mercy Hospital officials say nobody was injured in the shooting about 1 p.m. Thursday.Police spokeswoman Diane Richard said there is no indication the patient or that particular room was targeted.A witness in a parking lot next to the hospital reported hearing as many as four shots, but didn't see anyone with a weapon.Police are investigating.
