High school roundup: Freeport girls soccer keeps winning; Mars volleyball wins thriller vs Seneca Valley
Freeport girls soccer remained unbeaten in WPIAL Section 2-2A with a 2-1 win Wednesday at home over Shady Side Academy.
Scoring for the Yellowjackets were Brinley Sullivan and Elena Jenkins off assists from Camryn Woods and Peyton Los.
It was the eighth straight victory for Freeport (9-1, 6-0), which travels to Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
Pine-Richland 1, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado (4-5-1, 0-4-1) fell to the Rams in overtime.
Mars 2, Hampton 0 — Mackenzie Powell and Addison Jacoby each found the back of the net to secure the section victory for the Planets (8-3, 4-2).
Slippery Rock dropped the first set to Hickory, but answered by taking the next three to defeat the Hornets by set scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-21.
Adi Novad posted 15 kills and 10 digs, Madison Romanovich 11 kills and Lexi Caldwell 41 assists for the Rockets (8-2).
Mars 3, Seneca Valley 2 — In a wild match on the Planets’ court, Mars overcame a two-sets-to-none deficit to claim this non-section victory by scores of 19-25, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24 and 15-11.
A number of Planets had monster nights — Rylee Wooldridge with 27 kills and 19 digs, Gabi Weidemann 46 assists and 25 digs.
Cecilia Christy, Reese Connelly and Kate Southwell each tallied 10 kills for Mars; Christy added six blocks.
No statistics for Seneca Valley were provided.
North Catholic’s Riley Kontul and Izzy Engleka carded an 80 and 104, respectively, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A individual championship Tuesday at Seven Oaks Country Club near Beaver.
All 2A golfers advanced to next week’s final round.
Class 3A — Mars’ Makenna Myler and Elise Wadas shot first-round scores of 90 and 91, respectively, at Seven Oaks Country Club to advance to the final.
The final round of the 2A and 3A competition will be held next Wednesday at Sewickley Heights Country Club.
