Carl Albert

Carl Albert

Carl Albert, 100, of Plantation, Fla., passed away at 2 p.m. Friday at the West Broward Rehabilitation Center in Plantation, Fla.

He was born September 1912 in Franklin Township to the late Charles Albert and Blanch (Hockenberry) Albert.

Carl began his education at the one-room schoolhouse at Martin Elementary School, which is now Moraine State Park. He later moved to Butler and attended Butler High School. Carl enjoyed reading the Butler Eagle newspaper and the Bible. He attended the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He was very active in the church as a session member and financial secretary for many years. His first new car was a 1929 Ford which cost $605 and included tire chains. His last car was a new Pontiac and the salesman told him that probably was his second largest purchase after his house. He corrected him by saying that his home on Penn Street purchased in the 1940s was less than the car.

Carl especially enjoyed working at Eisler’s Nursery with his two brothers, two sons and two grandchildren for more than 50 years. He worked on landscaping jobs such as the Greater Pittsburgh Airport during World War II; Northway Mall, which was the first indoor mall in the Pittsburgh area, with many plants shipped from Florida; and the Westinghouse and Federal Buildings in downtown Pittsburgh.

Carl enjoyed his family and friends, and during his retirement of 35 years, he traveled the United States and spent the winter months with his brother-in-law, Jack Elliott of Butler. In 2002, Carl moved to Florida from Butler to live with his son, Ronald, in Plantation, Fla. He was able to cut the grass and ride the bus to the mall until he was 98. In March 2013, he entered hospice.

Carl always gave credit to his long life of 100 and half years to his loving family; attending church every Sunday; avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol, exercise and having Dr. Jarrod Frydman manage his care in his final years in sunny Plantation, Fla.

Carl is survived by one son, Ronald (Linda) Albert of Plantation, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Karen Albert of Butler; three grandchildren, Scott (Miriam) Albert of Boston, Mass., Shawn Albert of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Kimberly Jurich of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Abbie, Emma, Mateo and Luka Albert; one sister, Myrtle Beveridge of Panama City, Fla.; and six nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara (Berry) Albert, who he married on June 5, 1941, and who passed away March 18, 2002; one son, Edward Albert, who passed away three years ago on March 6; two brothers; and five sisters.
