George

Ralph E. George, 89, formerly of New Haven Lane, Center Township, died Sunday evening at Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Peabody, Mass., a son of the late Chester and Lucy Beckett George.

An electrical engineer, he earned his degree at Northeastern University in 1988. He retired from Cober Electronics in Stamford, Conn. Before that, he had been employed by the Tungsol Corp. in Bloomfield, N.J.

He also had lived in Hendersonville, N.C., and moved to Butler in 1998.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army, and during that time, he was given a special assignment working on the Manhattan Project in Oakridge, Tenn., that developed the first atomic bomb.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Lions Club in Butler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Reno George. They had married June 20, 1943, and she died Sept. 6, 2001. He also was preceded by a brother, Harold B. George.

Surviving are a son, Edwin C. (Christina) George of Warwick, N.Y.; three daughters, Dorothy (Wayne) King of Albuquerque, N.M., Carol Ann George of Butler and Lucille Wright of Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren, Nicole and Alexander George, Cindy (Tim) Oblender, Ken (Christy) Milmine and Clint (Lisa) Milmine; and five great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Dustin Oblender and Caden, Cody and Kollen Milmine.

<B>George — </B>Friends and family of Ralph E. George, who died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, are invited to attend a memorial service that will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 E. North St., Butler. The Rev. David Panther, his pastor, will officiate. A private inurnment will take place earlier at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeport, Pa.Cremation services were provided by <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, Butler.
