Lake Arthur's new look
FRANKLIN TWP — The comfort zone is expanding at Lake Arthur Golf Club.
The golf lounge is receiving a face-lift, a new cart garage is being constructed and a new deck will soon be in place above it.
“We’re here for the golfer,” Lake Arthur general manager and director of golf Scott Choura said. “What we’re doing is making the facility more enjoyable for them.”
Expanded tee boxes are being put in on hole No.’s 6, 9, 12 and 14 and roughly 40 trees have been removed from the golf course.
Choura said the removed trees “were very old and we didn’t want branches falling off and on to the course.”
The golf lounge has been remodeled, freshly painted and sports new carpeting and a large TV. The menu includes salads, sandwiches, wraps and quesadillas.
“It’s quick food, designed to serve the golfer,” Choura said. “We’re building the cart garage so we can have room to store all the carts.
“Previously, we’ve had to put some of the carts on the patio. Now we’ll be able to use that patio space for tables and chairs outside, again, for the golfers’ convenience and enjoyment.”
The cart garage is expected to be completed within two weeks. The deck above it may be finished by July.
Lake Arthur Golf Club plays host to eight to 10 weddings each year. Choura said the new deck will add to the facility’s viability that way.
“The peak wedding season is May to September — which is also prime golf season — so we get a lot of weddings here from October to April,” Choura said. “The deck will be suitable for wedding parties to use outside of our banquet hall.
“It will give people an outdoors option on a nice day or night. It will enhance golf outings as well.”
Tradition means a lot at Lake Arthur. The Bartony family has owned the course since 1974 and it plays host to 13 leagues, including the Wednesday A.M. Ladies League, which has been around since 1959.
Lake Arthur instituted its “family night” program last year and that has returned. Beginning at 4 p.m. each Friday, an adult may play nine holes on the course for $7, accompanied by his or her child, who may play for $5.
Choura said children ranging in age from 5 to 17 took advantage of this program last year.
“It was very successful,” he said. “It proved to be an effective way to introduce youths to the game at a very affordable rate.”
Lake Arthur is introducing another game to the public as well — FootGolf.
It combines soccer and golf as players kick a soccer ball instead of hitting a golf ball with a club. The FootGolf holes are obviously much larger.
Lake Arthur will debut its nine-hole FootGolf course to the public at 4 p.m. this Saturday. That course will be available to play each Saturday at that time throughout the season.
“If it takes off, we’ll extend play availability to Sundays after 4 p.m. and we can expand the course to 18 holes very quickly,” Choura said.
While the course’s front nine holes are being used for FootGolf, the back nine will remain open and available for regular golf play, Choura emphasized.
Lake Arthur is a member of the National Golf Course Owners Association “and members across the country swear by this game,” Choura said.
“Disc golf started somewhere and has become world-wide, with Butler County hosting the international tournament (this August). FootGolf can take off the same way.”
Cabin Greens Golf Course in Freeport is the only other course in the area offering FootGolf. The nearest courses after that are in Erie and Akron, Ohio.
