Hjördis Berner
Hjördis Adelé-Sofi Berner, 100, of Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community, Cranberry Township, passed away peacefully Thursday.
Born March 8, 1912, in Karlstad, Sweden, she was the daughter of the late Edvard and Agusta Christiansen.
Mrs. Berner was of the Swedish Lutheran faith and attended Protestant services faithfully each Sunday at Sherwood Oaks. She received her degree in home economics from the Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1936 and taught home economics in the public schools.
Mrs. Berner was one of the original residents of Sherwood Oaks since 1982, worked in their gift shop and served on numerous committees. In addition, Mrs. Berner was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of North Hills Passavant Hospital for a number of years and, until 2006, spent her summers in Sweden.
Mrs. Berner is survived by her daughter, Anita Berner Larsson of Cobourg, Ontario; her son and daughter-in-law, Rolf and Edie Berner of New Castle; her daughter-in-law, Georgia Berner Farber; 10 grandchildren, Mikael Berner, Leif Berner, Hans Larsson, Miranda Maher, Stig Larsson, Jennifer Berner, Ingrid Larsson, Erling Berner, Tate van Bellen and Olof Berner; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Erling Berner, who died Aug. 17, 1993; and one son, Christian Edvard Berner, who died April 18, 1984.
BERNER — A memorial service for Hjördis Adelé-Sofi Berner, who died Thursday, June 21, 2012, will be held at 1 p.m. July 5 in the Sherwood Oaks Retirement Community Auditorium, 100 Norman Drive, Cranberry Township, with the Rev. Nathan Loudon officiating. She will be laid to rest in Kviberg Cemetery, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Memorials in Mrs. Berner’s honor may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
