Drug ring suspects arrested
PITTSBURGH — Six Pittsburgh-area residents, including a Cranberry Township man, were charged along with people in Florida and Canada with conspiracy to distribute more than 220 pounds of marijuana.
Details of the alleged ring weren't expected to emerge immediately because criminal complaints will likely remain sealed even after the suspects appeared before a federal magistrate Thursday, said Margaret Philbin, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh.
Federal prosecutors said two Florida residents and six residents of Canada also were arrested as part of the investigation.
The suspects are Cuong D. Nguyen, 32, Dung Minh Tran, 33, and Magdi Milad Louis, 35, all of McCandless Township; Christopher George Leventis, 34, of Pittsburgh; Giacinto Rocco Derenzo, 29, of Cranberry Township; and Hau Duy Bach, 19, of Allison Park.
It was not clear if any of the Pennsylvania suspects have attorneys. Philbin did not have information on those from out of state.
Philbin said prosecutors likely won't detail how long the ring allegedly operated or how much marijuana it allegedly moved until after the complaints are unsealed, and just before the suspects have preliminary hearings next week.
The 220-pound minimum charged is a statutory minimum, not the actual amount of drugs in question, she said.
All of the Pennsylvania suspects were expected to be released pending their hearings next week. That means the government does not consider them to be a danger to the community or a risk to flee prosecution.
