Patriots gather up Moss for 3 years
Rest easy, Tom Brady. Your favorite target is coming back.
Randy Moss, coming off a record 23-touchdown catches during New England's unbeaten regular season, re-signed with the Patriots on Monday, getting a three-year deal worth $27 million.
Moss' agent, Tim DiPiero, said the deal includes guarantees of $15 million, with a $12 million signing bonus for the 31-year-old receiver who, in his first year with the team, helped Brady set a record with 50 touchdown passes. The signing was confirmed by the team shortly after Moss posted a message to fans on his Web site.
Moss helped the Patriots reach the Super Bowl, but they lost to the New York Giants — their only loss of the season.
The New York Jets continued their spending spree, unveiling 31-year-old guard Alan Faneca, who got $21 million guaranteed on a five-year, $40 million contract after 10 seasons in Pittsburgh. The Jets also signed linebacker Calvin Pace from Arizona for six years, $42 million in a deal that included a $20 million signing bonus, and former Detroit offensive lineman Damien Woody, reportedly for five years, $25 million.
Since free agency began Friday, the Jets have also acquired defensive tackle Kris Jenkins from Carolina for draft picks; traded linebacker Jonathan Vilma to New Orleans for a draft pick; signed defensive tackle Sione Pouha to a three-year contract extension and fullback Stacy Tutt to an exclusive-rights contract.
"We just thought it was the right opportunity for us," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "With these four players in particular, we just felt like they were opportunities to improve us at positions we felt could be upgraded."
Pace, Arizona's first-round pick in 2003, underperformed for most of his five seasons with Arizona, but is coming off his best year. Pace, 27, had 98 tackles, 6Z\x sacks and an interception after moving from defensive end to linebacker full time.
Woody, also a former first-rounder, started his career with New England in 1999 and spent the last four seasons with Detroit. He's a versatile lineman who has played center, guard and tackle in his career. With the Jets, Woody could replace veteran Anthony Clement as the starter at right tackle.
The Super Bowl champion Giants signed veteran safety Sammy Knight, who played for Jacksonville last season. He'll replace Gibril Wilson, who signed with Oakland, and help break in second-year man Michael Johnson.
"Sammy gives us another quality veteran who will definitely help our young guys in their development," coach Tom Coughlin said.
Atlanta released running back Warrick Dunn, who asked to be let go after the Falcons signed Michael Turner on Sunday. The 33-year-old Dunn averaged only 3.2 yards a carry, but joined the 10,000-yard club last season.
"Warrick has performed at an extremely high level for a very long time," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "Making moves like this one are never easy. It's tough, but we have to do what we feel is in the best long-term interest of the Falcons."
Dunn's former Falcons teammate, tight end Alge Crumpler, agreed to a two-year deal with Tennessee.
In other moves:
n Chicago traded veteran quarterback Brian Griese back to Tampa Bay for an undisclosed 2009 draft pick. The Bucs had released Griese after the 2005 season.
n Defensive end Antwan Odom signed a five-year deal worth $29.5 million with the Bengals. The four-year veteran will receive $11.5 million in guaranteed money in the package, agent Richard Rosa said.
n Carolina came to terms with former Steelers guard Keydrick Vincent on a two-year, $2 million deal.
